Surgical treatment of Spinal Conditions
- If the person has a significant spinal problem, which is causing neurological symptoms or is causing such severe pain with alteration of daily functions, wherein other modalities of treatment are not giving adequate response then surgery is suggested
- The main purpose of spine surgery is to reduce the compression on the nerves or spinal cord. In the earlier times spine surgery was done, through a routine open approach
- ‘Open spine surgery’ meant a long midline incision, retraction or separation the muscles from their attachments to bones. Usually after removal of the structures, which are compressing the nerves, additional stabilization with screws or plates was provided. This sometimes can be a very extensive surgery, which involved a lot of blood loss and constant retraction of these structures, could cause loss of muscle strength and function
- A routine spine surgery gives a complete decompression of the spinal cord or nerves, but the associated side effects of loss of muscle strength, instability and weakness post surgery, sometimes can intimidate patients to opt out of spine surgery
